Leopold I, 10th Holy Roman Emperor. Although he inherited the territory that had been weakened by the Thirty Years' War, he used his natural political power to expand it and laid a foothold for the restoration of the House of Habsburg. The emperor, who received a high degree of education and developed an outstanding talent as a composer, composed a large number of works during his lifetime, including over 150 Italian arias, 80 church music, and 17 ballet music. left.
The impetus for writing this requiem was the death of his first wife, Margarita Teresa de España (German name Margarete Theresia von Spagnien), on March 12, 1673. The then 33-year-old monarch was overwhelmed with great grief. He composed "Missa pro defunctis" (Mass for the Dead) to heal this heartbreak with his music. Based on G minor, which has been said to express "sad and sad feelings" since the 16th century, it is a large-scale work requiring a five-voice chorus, three trombones, and an instrumental ensemble accompanied by a bass continuo.
There is no doubt that the Emperor's works continued to be performed in the latter half of the 18th century not only because of their respect for the monarch, but also because of their high degree of perfection.
