There are a handful of mostly Irish or Scottish based folk songs that have accompanied me through life, comforting me when I needed it. These songs have been around in the world for centuries. Is this perhaps why they lull me into a sense of home and belonging? After a series of traumatic events (sometimes everthing happens all at once) i found myself deeply wounded and wondered at the time if these songs, which ironically almost all deal with death, illness and lost love, might bring me out of madness and back to life. I called Christian, a dear old friend of mine and brilliant musician, took a deep breath and asked him, if we could record them in his tiny studio in his summer house. "When do we start?" he replied. We spent many afternoons and evenings in his arbour, as the last summer days gave way to the arrival of the first snow. Warm inside, we talked about life and music. I knew the songs by heart and Christian found it easy to come up with accompaniments and we found ourselves in a great creative flow. Still, as my feeling of wellness revived in the secure creative environment, more ambition arrived into the project along with the participation of other musicians. Percussionist Marcel van Cleef, cellist Lee Caspi and violin player Shi-Ran Yinon all joined the fold and the experience of collaborating in my first ever recordings filled me with deep gratitude and satisfaction. Spring came and with it came a change of health, mood and confidence: we had recorded 11 songs of love and devastation in Christian’s little arbour-studio. So we called ourselves „Laube“, which is the German word for arbour and I hope that these songs, even thought they deal with dark themes and tell bitter stories, will comfort the listener as much as recording them did comfort me.
