How might the music have sounded like back in the times of the Łowicz village in Władysław Reymont’s novel Chłopi? Based on our knowledge, experience and archival recordings, we decided to recreate fragments of Boryna's wedding and illustrate Reymont's narrative. Can such music, which has been translated into modern language but yet remains faithful to the original sounds, be interesting to an audience today?
Description of the bands:
The band Napięcie performs music from the Rawa and Łowicz regions and conducts traditional dance workshops. The ensemble is inspired by the folk masters of these regions, including Jan Lewandowski, Franciszek Maradziecki and Andrzej Leszczyński. Drawing on their virtuosity and freedom of improvisation, it guides listeners and dancers through the entire spectrum of Polish dances from dreamy kujawiaks to fiery mazurkas. Searching for new sound qualities, the band uses historical instruments from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Members:
Łukasz Nizik – violin
Patryk Petersson – historical clarinet (Rudolf Tutz, a copy based on H. Grensera‘s 1790 instrument)
Jakub Owczarek – basses
Maria Nizik – percussion instruments, voice
The band Kożuch (formerly Gęsty Kożuch Kurzu) started in 2011. Its members came together out of a common passion for the melodies which border two Polish regions: Łęczyca and Łowicz 4 . This is where the band’s leaders, violinist Tadeusz Kubiak and harmonicist Sławomir
Czekalsk, come from. In addition, the band's repertoire also includes melodies from Opoczno, Sieradz and Rawa. Kożuch is a band appreciated and awarded at the most important national festivals devoted to traditional and folk music. In as early as 2012 it won the main prize, Baszta, (in the reconstructed folklore category) at the 46th Festival of Folk Bands and Singers in Kazimierz. In 2016, it received the Grand Prix at the Polish Radio Folk Festival Nowa Tradycja 5 . In the same
year, the band released their debut album, "Idzie burza 6 ". Apart from Poland, Kożuch has also played concerts in Estonia and the Czech Republic.
