LIU WENWEN – SUONA
Born in the 1990s, Liu is one of the youngest suona performers in the world, and already has an outstanding international career. In recent years, she has been invited to the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne as a soloist for the New Year’s concert, thus making her the first suona player to appear on the stage of the Sydney Opera House. There, she performed alongside the composer Tan Dun, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. She was also the soloist for the suona concerto in the China National Symphony Orchestra’s New Year’s concert, composed by Guan Xia, which was held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. In 2018, Liu performed at the Lunar New Year’s concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, together with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and was highly appreciated by the U.S.A ambassador and the mayor of Washington, D.C. As well as Tan Dun, she has also collaborated with Xia Yunfei, Ye Ts’ong, Shao En, Zhangyi, Tang Muhai, Wang Yongji, Zhang Lie and Lin Daye. Other long-lasting collaborations with world-renowned orchestras include the Marinsky Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and Singapore Chinese Orchestra, amongst many others. Liu Wenwen currently teaches suona at the faculty of Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM) and is the first doctorate candidate for the instrument.

LIANG ZHANG – CONDUCTOR
Liang Zhang is widely recognised as a leading conductor and pianist of his generation, enjoying close partnerships with the finest orchestras around China and beyond. Since 2010, he has served as Chief Conductor of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, and is currently their Deputy Director. He is also Vice Chair of the Shanghai Musicians Association. Zhang is often a guest conductor, and has appeared regularly with the likes of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, China National Opera Orchestra, Shanghai Opera House Orchestra and others. He has also collaborated internationally with soloists such as Paul Badura-Skoda, Ryu Goto, Sumi Jo, Wolfgang Schulz, Rainer Küchl and Lynn Harrell, as well as many more. His recording of Beethoven’s symphony cycle was released in 2020 on CD and vinyl format by Shanghai Music Publishing House, making him the youngest conductor in China to do so.

SHANGHAI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is a highly professional symphony orchestra that was formed by merging two former orchestras – the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, established in 1950, and the Shanghai Film Orchestra, established in 1956. Both made great contributions to the development of Chinese film and broadcasting industry during their time. Now, dedicated to symphony promotion, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra has organized a variety of activities including the Neighbourhood Concert and the School Concert. The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra has become the strategic partner with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for further cooperation. The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra is endeavouring to make itself an all-round and widely influential orchestra, offering further contributions to the development and prosperity of China’s symphony field.
