This soundtrack album features several original compositions of James Newton Howard primarily performed by saxophonist Wayne Shorter with an all-star ensemble, plus several jazz and pop standards performed by various artists including Shirley Horn, Take 6, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, and Dr. John (Jarreau and Dr. John do separate versions of Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies"). Most performances are solid, but no one tune stands out. Like many soundtracks, this one features songs "inspired" by the motion picture, but not contained therein; however, very few songs on this recording capture the dark intensity of David Mamet's film.~Review by Tim Griggs
