Joseph Leopold Eybler (1765-1846) was Mozart's slightly younger contemporary and friend who, despite having outlived Mozart by more than half a century, never outgrew him. As far as can be told from the few extant recordings of his works, Eybler was a professional composer who wrote elegantly charming music of the High Classical style with no small skill, if no great talent. In this sumptuous recording of his Quintetto and Trio for strings, Eybler's delightful yet reserved music is brought wonderfully to life by the Germany's Quintett Momento Musicale. While listeners looking for the emotional depths of Mozart's quintets or the lyrical charms of Haydn or Beethoven's trios may be disappointed, listeners who are more than satisfied with the shallower emotional depths of Mozart's Divertimentos and the lighter lyrical charms of Haydn's Cassations will be captivated by the limpid beauty of Eybler's music. The Quintett Momento Musicale plays with warmth, wit, and superlative ensemble, and, of course, Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm captures the performances in recordings that are models of clarity and honesty. While it's not for everyone, anyone who wishes Mozart had written more Divertimenti will surely enjoy this disc.
