The Life And Hard Times Of Guy Terrifico is a sidesplitting mockumentary about a 1970s country rock star as played by Matt Murphy (no, not Matt "Guitar" Murphy) who everyone thinks was shot and killed. But he predictably resurfaces thirty something years later to get the band back together and show this new world what "real" country music sounds like. And though his backing band on this enjoyable soundtrack comes off like an authentic California twang-rock outfit from the '70s, Murphy's scratchy voice stands out, sounding more Jeff Tweedy than Gram Parsons. Inflectional anachronisms aside, the songs here are great — especially the bouncy cover of The Dead's "Friend Of The Devil," which eerily reveals what New Riders Of The Purple Sage might sound like if they had started up in the 21st century. "Just A Show" ignites with fiery a pedal steel that recalls The Stones' "Torn And Frayed" from Exile On Main Street. Kris Kristofferson's grizzled voice joins Murphy on the folky "New Mr. Me" and Donnie Fritts sings a bouncy little dipsomaniac's ditty on "(My Life Would Make) A Damn Good Country Song."
