A little fast where others are usually slow, a little slow where others are usually fast, Lars Vogt is, to say the least, an unpredictable Mozart player. He has a lovely tone, but he won't necessarily use it when the music's andante grazioso. He has a terrific technique, but he won't always let it loose when the music's allegro assai. He has a winning way with phrasing, but he won't invariably deploy it when the music's andante cantabile. Vogt's performances are often but not always a bit left of center -- his Fantasia in D minor is very cool, while his Rondo in A minor is nearly torrid -- and often but not always completely convincing -- his C major Sonata is a bit too dry while his Duport Variations are delightfully droll. Listeners who follow recordings of Mozart's piano music will find many things to admire, few things to regret, and much to surprise them on Vogt's two-disc recital from 2005. EMI's sound is clear, clean, and appealing.
