Wolverlei - Wolverlei (1978)

Wolverlei is a Dutch folk band, founded in 1977 and stopped in 1981. The band is known for its subdued interpretation of Dutch traditional songs and folk music. String instruments and violin play a leading role in Wolverlei's music.

In 1977, Kees van der Poel (ex-Pitchwheel, ex-Wargaren) and Frans Smulders (ex-Bloemoen) from Utrecht started the band. Jurek Willig (ex-Wargaren) joins the band soon after, but leaves Wolverlei again in 1978. His place is taken by Rens van der Zalm (ex-Fungus). In the same year, the first self-titled LP is released. A large part of the LP is based on material from the Dutch Folk Song Archive of Ate Doornbosch. In 1980 the band is further expanded with keyboardist/violinist Marten Scheffer. A year later the LP Wind Tegen is released. In that year (1981) the band also decides to stop. In retrospect, both albums by Wolverlei are often seen as the pinnacle of Dutch folk music.
