Beyond Amazing: Spider-Man – The Exhibition - Sixty Years Of Marvel’s Iconic Super Hero
“Curating an exhibition devoted to one of popular culture’s best-loved figures is a daunting task – one that, yes, comes with both great power AND great responsibility. There are so many ways that audiences have encountered the wall-crawler over the past six decades, so many important stories to touch on, so many interpretations of the costume, so many related characters that demand to be included.
As curators, we began our work on this project by defining the twin threads of the story we wanted to tell: the fictional history of Spider-Man, and his real-world evolution from humble comic book hero to international icon. We then pinpointed important moments, and worked with the design team to determine the best means of display for each: exhibiting some classic comic pages as original pen-and-ink artifacts, some as oversized reproductions, some on state-of-the-art digital canvases. With certain images, we wanted to utilize modern digital color; for others, we scanned original print comics to convey the tactile sense and slight imperfections inherent to classic comic books.
And in this recording, you can hear how Sebastian M. Purfürst employs parallel techniques in his musical composition and production – not only writing the notes and melodies, but creating a fully realized world of sound. Textures underpin musical phrases, elements fade into one another, eras of Spider-Man’s history are conjured up through surface noise and instrumentation, deploying the weapons in his arsenal to support and enhance the overall narrative.
This record works as a souvenir of the exhibition experience, but – perhaps even more importantly – it’s a work that stands on its own, a Spider-suite that takes us through the streets of New York City, up walls and across rooftops, and evokes the excitement and emotions at the heart of the world’s most beloved Super Hero.”
