Jeb Loy Nichols follows up his 2022 album 'The United States Of The Broken Hearted' with 'Under The Willow Tree' a 5 track EP of solo versions of songs from his album, as well as a performance of 'Try Love', a song written by Jeb for Horace Andy's album 'Midnight Rocker'.
Jeb opens the EP with two of the covers from 'The United States of the Broken Hearted': 'Satisfied Mind', and 'I Hate The Capitalist System'. When asked about these covers in an interview he said: "I think there was the spectre of my father around this record a lot, like growing up and listening to music with him. The three covers were all favourite songs of his, Woody Guthrie’s ‘Deportees’, he loved that song, ‘Satisfied Mind’, which has been recorded by lots of different people was a big favourite of his. I remember him playing the Sarah Ogan Gunning song, ‘I Hate The Capitalist System’, I remember thinking, what is this about, I don’t understand it what is she on about, what is capitalism. My dad was a teacher, and he would explain things as they went along. I think those three songs just summed up me and my dad, but also they are songs that I thought were relevant today."
Jeb wrote three songs for Horace Andy on Midnight Rocker: 'Easy Money', 'Today Is Right Here', and 'Try Love'. When asked about his relationship with Horace Jeb said:
"I first met Horace in 2001 when I was asked to both open and DJ for him on a tour of Britain. Horace was doing an acoustic show, just a guitarist and a percussionist. We all shared a van and Horace was in charge of the video player. His favourite videos were highlights of Muhammed Ali's fights, Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee, The Making of Songs In The Key Of Life, and The Best Of Richard Pryor. It was, from the beginning, a pure joy. On the second day he began referring to me as Conscience Brother. The entire tour was a blessing. Thanks Horace."
'Under The Willow Tree' was recorded at Jeb's home in rural Wales.
