The historical recordings of "The Rite of Spring" and "Petrushka" recorded in Paris in November 1956 produced by John Culshaw have been reprinted as the world's first SA-CD sound source. This "Rite of Spring" is the fourth official recording for Monteux, and can be said to be a monumental recording recorded in Paris, the same place where he made his world premiere recording in January 1929. It is the only stereo recording, and it is a sound source with a very high historical value in that it was recorded by DECCA, which was already excellent in recording technology at that time. It is interesting to note that it was recorded only 43 years after its premiere, and that it was recorded in a period before it attained the status of a classic in a sense as it is today. The ensemble is reminiscent of the atmosphere of Paris in the past. The timbres of the wind instruments at that time, which gradually changed over the next 10 years or so, may be said to be closer to the era of the premiere than in modern times. With the latest reprint from the original analog master tape of this country, it became possible to understand the atmosphere, tone, and atmosphere at the time of recording more precisely. It is a high-quality reproduction that makes you feel the afterglow of those days.

Monteux, who originally premiered "Petrushka" in 1911, left two session recordings. This board was his first official recording, and after this there are only the sound sources left for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and RCA in 1959. The performance is as wonderful as "The Rite of Spring", and the version seems to have adopted the 4-wind formation at the time of the premiere. It is also a big feature that Julius Katchen (1926.8.15-1969.4.29), who had released many albums at DECCA at the time, was appointed as a pianist who is often not credited. The piano part is also known as a difficult piece, and Katchen's brilliant touch has a great influence on the overall performance. In addition, Monteux's way of depicting each scene is an eloquent performance that stirs the imagination. We hope that the new high-quality sound will further reevaluate the product.
