A tour de force of wonked hip hop, cuboid electro and proto-EDM swag by Ghostly MVP Mux Mool for fans of Daft Punk, Mr. Oizo, Rustie, Hud Mo, Flying Lotus, Lorn.
Originally emerging from that weird point in 2010 when post-dubstep, IDM, electro-house and hip hop were in flux and the US was beginning to take note of a sound it help spawn decades prior, ’Skulltaste’ spoke to a sort of double refractive dialogue between the US and the mutations of Rustie, HudMo and the LuckyMe crew in Glasgow, or Mr. Oizo, Daft Punk and Kitsuné in Paris.
The results are shy of the brasher US takes on c.21st dance music, and better aligned with the West Coast sound of Low End Theory et al; each track slippery with wavey, hyperchromatic melody and firmed up with ruggeder computer funk that produced some standout cuts on ’Skulltaste’. We’re talking the likes of his jiggy zinger ‘Hog Knuckles’ or the swanging P-funky synth torque of ‘Breakfast Enthusiast’, filter house specials such as ‘Enceladus’ and the sawtooth electro-disco thrust of ‘Crackers’, here replete with bonus track highlights in the Burial-esque brooding downstroke of ’Stay Calm’, and a peach worthy of comparison to BoC on ‘1st and 4th’.
