"We usually associate the vibraphone in jazz with soothing music. As well as sounding beautiful, it brings to mind musicians such as Lionel Hampton or Milt Jackson. Fortunately, music evolves and this instrument has gained equal status with other instruments in more recent jazz styles. It is therefore with great pleasure that we welcome the music on the new CD by Mirko Pedrotti and his quintet, a group that can pride itself justice on winning first prize in the 2013 Barga Jazz Contest. Pedrotti is a leader with a rigorous musical training but also one who shows great respect for the musicians alongside him.
He uses the vibraphone as an excellent solo instrument as well as a simple part of the ensemble. From a creative point of view, there is a lesson on free style (Acidulo) but also on the Canterbury school (Alfa) and on hard bop (Chris Spot There).
His style of writing in the final suite, which owes much to twentieth century contemporary classical music, is also very interesting. The most melodic track is that entitled Noabel, a piece written by the tenor sax player Matteo Cuzzolin.
A quality CD that revives our hope in the vitality of new Italian jazz".
