Charlie Parker is a 10″ LP album by the quartet composed of Charlie Parker (alto saxophone), Percy Heath (bass), Max Roach (drums) and Al Haig (piano). It was recorded at Fulton Recording Studio, New York, on July 30, 1953. It was produced by Norman Granz and released by Clef Records in 1954. The artwork on the cover was made by David Stone Martin.
There are several reasons to buy this LP. One glance at the personnel list should be convincing enough. The clean, energetic quartet and/or small group sound contributed by these brilliant players allow Parker to unfurl his alto genius unhindered while still matching him in intensity and with equally formidable solo chops. Secondly, the track list is packed with some of Parker’s finest compositions. Now’s the Time, Confirmation, Laird Baird, and Kim are given superior readings here with fluent, challenging, and strikingly inventive playing from all involved. That Charlie Parker is at the helm here needn’t even be listed as a reason to pick up this set, since it should go without saying that his beautiful, soulful tone, technical expertise, and ceaseless innovation are as mind-blowing as ever.
While Charlie Parker never truly released a studio album that can be called a "masterpiece", this is probably his best. Yes, the material was recorded with two different groups on two different dates, and it's a bit lopsided (the A side is superior, in my opinion) but this is a master at work. "Confirmation" might be my favorite Charlie Parker composition, and it's not a contrafact like most of them. It swings with nostalgia, to these ears. Interestingly, this is Parker's first recording of the tune despite the fact that he composed it back in 1945. "Now's the Time" is one of Parker's most famous compositions, a blues and perhaps the ultimate classic bebop blues. It's the presence and excellence of these two tunes, in my opinion, which tips the scale in favor of the A side. That, and the presence of Percy Heath, who is a fantastic bassist.
Nonetheless, the entire album is a veritable showcase for Parker's mastery. It's not just virtuosity, but a unique touch that I can only describe as "natural", which characterize Bird's playing. Max Roach was an ideal musical partner for Parker, whose authority behind the kit is as legendary as Parker's on sax. Of the two pianists Jones is the more celebrated, and I do agree with another reviewer that his general bluesiness is more interesting than Haig's competent bopism.
It's only too bad that Mr. Parker didn't long enough to record during the classic period of hi fidelity jazz. Indeed, his tragic but incredible life ended just as that period began.
