These recordings of Mozart's wonderful string quintets, I believe are the best available. For a start, the recording has a perfect balance of all the individual instruments with plenty of lower end for the Cello's. As for the playing, the G ensemble have such a relaxed approach to these mature peices which lets you assume that they have played them for many years. Anyone who is yet to discover these peices must do immediately! I have always prefered them over his more popular string quartets simply because they have a more spontaineous feel and aren't quite as uniformed as say the Haydn quartets can be. The quintets were written late in Mozart's life and have in good measure; both his early quirkyness(for look of a better word) mixed with a more complex tapestry in certain movements that almost seems to leave the classic mode to forsee the romantic era. These peices, I like to believe must have had a big influence on Beethoven's chamber music especially his op 18 quartets. The genius that Mozart is for me, is the effect the music has on you- even when you're not focused on it. These are always on my mp3 player and are fab for chilling you in the morning. Try it!
