Erkki (Erik Gustaf) Melartin was born in the rural municipality of Ka¨kisalmi on February 7, 1875 and died in the rural municipality of Helsinki on February 14, 1937. Melartin was one of the most significant, prolific and versatile composers of his generation, with six symphonies, orchestral and chamber music, 350 piano works, more than 300 songs, the Aino opera, the ballet Sininen Helmi (Blue Pearl), children’s music, and pop songs under the pseudonym Eero Mela. Melartin, whose language of melody includes nuances of national romance, impressionism, and expressionism, was open-minded in his style and open to new influences. He accepted atonality as an effect, but not as a systematic style. The open-minded Melartin made trips abroad by car and plane at a time when this was still rare and was enthusiastic about the early days of radio in the late 1920s. He composed special radio works and in his writings even foresaw television opera as the art form of the future.
