More K-Tel than Ace/Rhino/Bear Family.After decades of seeing output here and there via a variety of labels - Epic, EU Columbia/CBS, PIR/Legacy/ Sony Special Markets, Westside, Right Stuff, Knight etc, - the prospect of the final release of the storied output of Gamble and Huff's PIR family of labels with at least Mr. Gamble involved held much promise. At last the outstanding legacy soul label was about to join Atlantic, Fame, Motown and Stax in boxed set heaven. Well maybe. The tracks are presented in an idiosyncratic rather than release date order as selected by a Mr. Ralph Tee with original 45 releases mixed in with album tracks for no apparent reason. For the most part, the music is adequately mastered without any acknowledgment as to who did it, although some of the tracks don't sound as good in terms of dynamic range as their recent releases on Legacy. Not much new in terms of undiscovered gems and some of the inclusions/inclusions are inevitably questionable. I'm sure a MFSB/Harold Melvin/O'Jays fan will wonder about CD7 with Mel Jones and Thad Lewis and decidedly MOR/Smooooooooooooth jazz from Michael Pedicin Jr. and Monk Montgomery. Where's the Philly groove? Others may wonder how ANY PIR anthology could exist without "I Miss You" - the full 8 mins - one of the defining moments in soul, let alone Philly Soul. A good outing but far from definitive. Pales in comparison to the three boxed sets on Stax and even the modest 3 CD set on Fame from Kent Soul. Unfortunately with this release and the two Sony Boxed sets - seems unlikely that there will be a market for another set along the lines of those from Motown/Stax etc.
