Lulu scored a big international dance hit in 1993 with the housey and anthem-like "Independence." In the States, however, besides a few spins in nightclubs, the song went virtually unheard, yet it stands as one of the better dance-pop songs of the decade, and Lulu's delivery was full-throttle. Accompanying that single was the long-since out of print album Independence, filled with early-1990s British-styled R&B. The beat from the soulful and sexy mid-tempo "Restless Moon" recalls (in some form or another) Madonna's "Justify My Love," and Lulu sings with total gusto and bravado on "Back for More" (with Bobby Womack), "How 'Bout Us," and "I'm Walking Away." Other guest stars appear on this album, including Barry Gibb on "Let Me Wake Up in Your Arms" and Frankie Knuckles on the reprise of the aforementioned song. Unfortunately, other songs, such as "Rhythm of Romance," fall into bland and dated middle-of-the-road adult contemporary fare (thankfully her rough and soulful voice is always her saving grace). One can only help but wish that there were more songs on this album in a similar vein to the energetic and unforgettable title track. This isn't a bad album by any means, it just could have been better. © Jose F. Promis
