Artur Schnabel was born in 1882 in a small Austrian village called Lipnik, which had neither railway station nor post office. His parents discovered his gifts very early and took him to Vienna, where he studied first under Professor Schmidt, whom he disliked because of his harshness, and then, from 1891 to 1897, under Theodor Leschetizky. At the same time as he studied the piano, Schnabel had lessons in harmony and counterpoint from Eusebius Mandy- czewsky, who introduced him to Brahms and even gave him the opportunity to go out With the great composer several times. Leschetizky realised the exceptional qualities of his pupil. In the cryptic manner of an oracle he told him: “ You are never a pianist; you are a musician.” Great teacher as he was, he made it possible for him to realise his wonderful talents in both directions. At a very early age, Schnabel undertook a series of tours throughout Europe which was crowned with success. He gave performances of sonatas with Carl Flesch, played trios and accompanied the singer Therese Behr, whom he married and by whom he had two sons. He took up residence in Berlin, and in 1927 played for the first time the 32 Sonatas of Beethoven. In 1930 Koussevitzky invited him to take part in a Brahms festival. Then came tours in Spain, Greece, Turkey and Palestine. Every year he gave concerts in Great Britain and, from 1933 onwards, in the United States. In 1932-33 he again performed the 32 Beethoven Sonatas ; in 1934 he played them in London, and again in 1936 in New York, at the Carnegie Hall. The advent of the Nazi régime forced him to leave Germany and he spent his winters in London and summers in Italy, on Lake Como. In February, 1939, he settled in the United States and stayed there throughout the war. His fame continued to increase until his death in August, 1951. The predestined interpreter of Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert was also the composer of several bold and advanced works, including a piano concerto, pieces for violin and piano, lieder and chamber music. He was equally admirable as the complete artist and as the teacher who was concerned not only with the technique of his pupils but also With their development as individuals.
