Melodiya releases digitally remastered recordings of double bass virtuoso and teacher Eugene Levinson who celebrates his 85th birthday this year. He is known as a long-term soloist and accompanist of the New York Philharmonic’s double bass section and professor at the Juilliard School. In 2003, he was given the Special Recognition Award from the International Society of Bassists for his “extraordinary skills and contribution to the worldwide community of bassists.” These recordings date back to the musician’s Leningrad period. Before he left for the United States, Eugene Levinson played in the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra led by Evgeny Mravinsky and was a soloist with the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra.
Together with accompanist Eugenia Diener, Eugene Levinson recorded the double bass concerto by Serge Koussevitzky, sonatas for double bass and piano by Paul Hindemith and Adolf Míšek, arrangements of Gabriel Fauré’s Élégie, two pieces by Enrique Granados, and the aria from the Henri Casadesus Concerto in the Style of J.C. Bach.
