Carlo Yvon was born in 1798, lived in Milan and died in 1854. An oboist noted for the beauty of his sound, his technical abilities and his fine taste, he was an instrumentalist and composer whose creative gifts went beyond the mere production of pedagogical works. Yvon was undoubtedly one of the few Italian oboe virtuosos in the history of the instrument. It was on virtuosity that Yvon based his school of oboe-playing, leaving behind works dedicated to his pupils such as the Capriccio per tre oboe or the Sei studi con accompagnamento di pianoforte. The other important characteristic which stands out in Yvon’s compositional style is the spontaneous vein of cantabile writing, permeated by the Italian bel canto style of the period. This recording presents the world premiere of the complete works written and published by Carlo Yvon for the oboe, with the addition of his Canto notturno, a sonnet set to music for soprano and piano.
