Daemon Chili is what’s bubbling away in the great American melting pot, rib-sticking and pleasantly chewy, a filling, nourishing stone soup of hill music, shuffling blues and meat-n-taters rock livened up with Dixie touches, bayou swagger and a coterie of characters that positively reek of life and all its inherent virtues and vices. Rise Up is the antidote for days when sunshine just doesn’t warm us like it usually does; an injection of backyard party energy peppered with wry wisdom, off-handedly sharp insights, and a chuckle or two. While there are echoes of the Nitty Gritty Dirty Band and Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, Daemon Chili is really a newfangled jug band itching to go electric, a spirit louder and more cantankerous than their forebears rattling inside them making them kin to Uncle Tupelo, Warren Zevon and Exile-era Rolling Stones – i.e. purveyors of dirt floor jams for bruised knuckle working week warriors unafraid to tussle when it’s right and warranted. Bandleader-songwriter-singer-guitarist Michael Dion’s new baby takes the best parts of his old unit Hot Day At The Zoo and spins its DNA with something funkier and more feisty, particularly once Rise Up leaps into its bracing live second half, revealing a band of muscular musicianship, barred teeth, and steely-eyed focus. See, the devils come out to play with the better angels in Daemon Chili, who’re cranking it hard for folks living on biscuits and booze, thunder rumbling beneath their feet as they keep just steps ahead of the bill collectors, ex-lovers and bad breaks that dog one’s days. Rise Up carries us closer to the wind that sweeps away our worries and damaging pride, a breeze so damn natural and easy flowing that you’ll likely only realize the good it’s done you when the last cut fades and you catch how your troubled mind is lighter after Dion and his saucy cohorts have had their way with you.
