Harpsichordist and conductor Korneel Bernolet was named Belgian Young Musician of the Year for 2014; he has been described by the international musical press as “an unbelievably talented performer with a faultless mastery of the keyboard”, a “first-class musician and virtuoso, and one of Europe’s top harpsichord specialists”. He has worked alongside Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques as harpsichordist, chef-de-chant and assistant conductor at several important opera houses; he also performs with La Petite Bande (Sigiswald Kuijken), Scherzi Musicali (Nicolas Achten), BachPlus (Bart Naessens) and Transports Publics (Thomas Baeté) and has served as assistant conductor to Jos van Immerseel of Anima Eterna, B’Rock and Frank Angsteribbe of cantoLX. His debut solo CD of works for harpsichord by Claude Balbastre (Aliud, 2013) was praised by the international music press and was nominated by the Belgian radio station Klara as one of the three best Flemish CD releases of 2013. Bernolet has studied with Paul Clement, Ewald Demeyere, Gustav Leonhardt and in particular with Christophe Rousset; he has performed as soloist, continuo player and conductor in the Benelux, throughout Western Europe, Macedonia, Mexico and South Korea. Alongside his other freelance activities as recording engineer and editor, he also teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and the International Opera Academy Gent.
He and his Apotheosis Ensemble strive to recreate music from the Baroque to the Romantic periods in a responsible manner. Their performance dynamic is central to their approach, particularly so in respect to making music from earlier periods sound as modern as possible in this 21st century; musicological research is one of their points of departure in this, but musical experimentation is just as if not more important. The ensemble works as a collective, varying its musicians according to the works performed; its repertoire comprises works from the 17th to the 20th centuries and the ensemble can range from a chamber ensemble to vocal soloists to a full orchestra using period instruments.
