John's music was best described by Blues Music reviewer Mark Tucker of F.A.M.E. Magazine when he said, "Original and inventive yet true to the genre" The culmination of all his influences with the blues thread running through very note of it. This new CD "Born Blue-The Sun Sessions" is John' s best work to date. Recorded at the world famous "Sun Studios" in Memphis the music on "Born Blue" touches on all the different styles and mutations that the blues has endured since it's inception as a true American art form. "Born Blue" begins with the bluesy/funky opening track "Same Dog" which has that New Orleans groove reminiscent of "Little Feat". John calls on those ghosts again later in the CD on a track called "Walk My Way" in this song he's trying to win the heart of a women he sees daily. Both tracks show off John's soulful vocal ability combined with his inventive guitar style. His guitar playing has been described as B.B. King, Chet Atkins, Roy Buchanan and Stevie Ray Vaughn all rolled into one. A guitar style that so impressed blues legend Joe Louis Walker that he asked John to make a guest appearance on his first Alligator records release "Hellfire". "Hellfire" went on to win The "Living Blues Award for Best Contemporary Blues CD"
The next track "2 Dollar Dress" takes the ZZTOP/Stevie Ray Vaughn vibe to it's extreme and showcases John's slide guitar playing. The lyrics on this track will make any women feel like a $1,000,000 dollars. John also rocks out later on in the CD with another Rockin Blues tune called "Hearts On Fire" which has tinges of Rory Gallagher running through it.
There are two duets on "Born Blue" both featuring John and his wife, vocalist Lauren Cook D'Amato "Live Without Me" basically tells a story of what it's going to be like after he leaves. "The Lie" is about a women so in love with her husband she is willing to "Look The Other Way" to keep him in her life. John and Lauren's vocals blend together so well it's amazing. "Blues Man" is a slow rocking semi-biographical look inside what it's really like to be a "Blues Man"
with a few "tongue-in-cheek" phrases sure to bring a smile to your face. "Helicopter Blues" features John and his cigar box guitar, if you like old school this is the track for you. "My Only Friend" in another slow rocking groove with a blazing guitar solo at the end in the vein of "Gary Moore", Jimi Hendrix, etc. and lyrically gives you a peek into John's faith.
"True To The Blues" is a swinging blues song showcasing John's clever guitar lines and smooth vocals. If you like jump blues check this song out. "Born Blue" is the title track and gives you great insight into the struggles of being born with a congenital heart defect. The lack of oxygen caused by this defect resulted in John literally being "Born Blue".
If you like soulful vocals, inventive guitar, great songwriting and listening to different styles of blues on one compact disc this is the CD for you.
