From the 1940s until his death in 1991, flute player Antonio Pantoja specialized in traditional Andean music. Although Pantoja was born and raised in Peru, he spent much of his life in Buenos Aires, and along the way, he developed an appreciation of Argentinean songs and learned to play them along with traditional Andean songs of Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. Originally released in Argentina by Tonodisc, Songs of the Andes didn't come out in the U.S. until 1994, when JVC also released it in Japan. This appealing CD illustrates Pantoja's mastery of the quena, a wood flute that South American Indians have been playing for centuries. Pantoja turns his attention to original compositions like "El Sicuri," "El Labrador," and "Alborozo Coya" as well as gems that range from the famous "El Condor Pasa" to songs by Argentinean composers, including Edmundo Zaldivar's "El Humahuaqueño." While Songs of the Andes isn't devoid of non-Andean influences, Andean music is definitely its foundation. This CD illustrates just how charming a performer Pantoja was -- and how great a loss his death was.
