Under Gong Yi, he started practicing guqin (an ancient string instrument of the zither family) at the age of 9, and then entered the Music Middle School Affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he majored in guqin from the age 12. Guqin master Gong Yi spoke of him as “a great guqin performer”.

During his stay in Europe, Chen held nearly one hundred solo recitals, and collaborated with western symphony orchestras, performing works such as Guqin Concerto ‘String Charm’ by Luo Zhongrong, ‘Silent Concerto’ by Chen Qigang, to name a few.
In 2003, Chen Leiji was admitted to Central Conservatory of Music to study for a master’s degree in conducting under Yu Feng.
