Veering from breezy pastoralism to jazz-noise, folkwise ambient and midnight dread, Bog Bodies’ 4th album extends a fine introduction to the Kentish trio’s coolly wayward styles
Revolving aroundRobert Stillman (saxophone / clarinet), Anders Holst (guitar) and Seán Carpio (drums/guitar/vocals), the trio have played with a wide range of artists - The Smile, Manuel Göttsching, Luke Temple and Ghostpoet among them - and, when combined, naturally meet at a broad but refined juncture of styles.
Inspired by “the mythologies and magical undercurrents that knit together our existence in the information age”, a certain sense of mysticism is made manifest in their instrumental swirl of ideas, taking a full hour to cross borders from lolling, soundtrack-like whims in the landscape of ’Superman 3 in Our Time’, to guttural noise howl and distortion in their title tune, and elegiac glossolalia in ‘Pater Dreamwalk’ - and that’s only the first three parts. The journey follows on a winding course, touching grass again with the sauntering Americana influences of ‘Tea is a Tree’, and navigating Earth via Sunn 0))) influences in the big-skied 11 minute centrepiece ‘One That is Reflected in the Image Becomes All’, before puckering up to modal jazz in ‘The Crab’ and departing via more brooding Bohren Und Der Club of Gore-textures on ‘Open Arms’, into regression session epic ‘Cave Painting 2019 AD’.
