It was the shepherds who first learned of the Savior's birth. In Italian cities, this story lives on in Christmas traditions to this day. Even in the Baroque period, composers such as Corelli, Marcello, Handel, Vivaldi and Guido were inspired by the pastoral sounds of the piffari, who came down from the mountains to the cities of Rome or Naples at Christmas, playing their traditional instruments such as the bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, piffero, flute and fiddle.

In her Christmas album "Pastorale", released by deutsche harmonia mundi, Dorothee Oberlinger combines works by Arcangelo Corelli, Alessandro Scarlatti, Giovanni Guido, Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Christoph Pez with the traditional tunes of the Piffari to create a lavishly colorful musical picture book of Italian Christmas. The musical painting is prominently illustrated by baroque soprano Dorothee Mields, Oberlinger's Ensemble 1700 and the Italian pipers of "Li Piffari e le Muse".

Corelli, Marcello, Scarlatti and also Handel - they all got along in the Roman shepherd's alliance of the "Pastori d'Arcadia" with the pan flute in the coat of arms and were together in Rome in search of the Arcadian utopia - "Love and Peace", united with nature. In Arcangelo Corelli's Christmas concerto "Fatto per la Notte di Natale," Dorothee Oberlinger colors the concluding Pastorale with real pifferari in the traditional instrumentation. For this famous concerto grosso, she adopts the instrumentation of a chamber music edition published in London in the 18th century with two recorders. In the oboe concerto Concerto in D minor by Alessandro Marcello - written for oboe and later embellished by Johann Sebastian Bach - Oberlinger lets her "flauto dolce," cherished by the Marcello brothers, sing in her arrangement for recorder
One of the best-known Baroque voices, Dorothee Mields, is heard in Alessandro Scarlatti's Christmas cantata "O di Betlemme altera povertà," as well as in an arrangement of Italy's most popular Christmas carol "Tu scendi dalle stelle," which itself is echoed several times in Scarlatti's cantata.

The trace of the shepherds is omnipresent in the musical world of the Baroque. It can also be found in the opening movement or the swaying Siciliano in George Frideric Handel's famous organ concerto in F major, which Dorothee Oberlinger plays on the flute and which Handel himself arranged for recorder and basso continuo. The severity of the Italian winter emerges programmatically in Giovanni Antonio Guido's "L'Hyver" (The Winter), reminiscent of Vivaldi's famous "Inverno" - the orchestra must first thaw out before "the cruel north wind" chases across the land with gusts of strings. The recording concludes with a new recording of Vivaldi's breathtakingly virtuosic Flautino Concerto in C major RV 443, in which rustic circling hurdy-gurdy and bagpipe motifs and drone notes can be heard, and a delicately orchestrated magnificent Passacaglia by Johann Christoph Pez from his "Concerto Pastorale".
