This album is a perfect gift for all music lovers who adore Karol Szymanowski’s output. The second most prominent Polish composer after Chopin became known as a creator who would break patterns, look for new sounds and incorporate Polish music into the European trend. At the same time, like no one else, he was able to extract unique values from it, coming from the most interesting and best-preserved ethnographic regions – Podhale and Kurpie. In Szymanowski’s music, the raw beauty of the material drawn from folk music coherently combines with modern and uncompromising solutions of formal compositional art.
This album reflects the creative path that Szymanowski had taken since the beginning of his formation, from his fascination with neo-romanticism, through the influences of the Impressionists, to his last stylistic achievements. And here comes a surprise for the listeners: the tracks featured on the album are transcriptions for flute and piano; an ensemble that was never used by Szymanowski in his compositions. However, the sound of flute perfectly aligns with the atmosphere of the compositions presented here, reflecting all their musical and expressive qualities. Thanks to transcriptions, we can listen to this music from a new perspective, once again discovering its beauty and depth. An excellent and versatile Polish flautist, Agata Igras, performs the flute part; she is accompanied by an experienced and outstanding pianist – Mariusz Rutkowski.
