Of Beethoven's nine symphonies, these two works are the least performed and possibly the most misunderstood, overshadowed as they are by their odd-numbered neighbors in the series. On this 1989 Telarc release, Christoph von Dohnányi and the Cleveland Orchestra try to do justice to them, though their results are mixed and somewhat disappointing. The Symphony No. 4 is an ingratiating piece that works best when played in a relaxed manner and with a light touch, but it is perhaps too dynamic and punchy in this performance. Dohnányi handles the amorous Adagio delicately enough, and his robust take on the Scherzo is appropriate. But the tempi in the outer movements are too rushed and frenetic to properly convey this symphony's radiance and grace. The Symphony No. 8 is a compact work of Classical proportions and character, yet it is possibly the hardest symphony to interpret because Beethoven's intentions may be straightforward or ironic, depending on one's point of view. Dohnányi opts for the former and gives the symphony a brusque, extroverted performance that almost convinces with its confidence and energy. The Cleveland Orchestra is fully engaged in its work, and it lends the piece a muscular quality with especially strong support in the woodwinds.
