On August 15th & 16th 2014, The Bottoms Up Blues Gang celebrated 13 years together as a band. They say thirteen is an unlucky number, but we feel nothing but luck. We chose to celebrate our anniversary by recording two shows at The Shanti because we are proud to call it home and because unfortunately The Shanti will be closing its doors in November, 2014.
The Shanti is a dive bar in every good sense of the word. It sits in a St. Louis neighborhood called Soulard, which just happens to mean drunkard in French. Perfect for us. Owner/operator, Teresa Parker, was one of the first people to hire The BUBG and she supported us on every level over the years. She created a venue with a vibe built to facilitate a musical good time. A place where musicians have the freedom to perform over many years, so the music has a time to (as Eric Mcspadden would say) soak. We figure The BUBG has performed at The Shanti no less than 150 times and so many of those shows stick in our memory to this day. The small, smoky, drunk room of music lovers seems to bring out the best in us every time. We are, and always will be, forever grateful for the entire Shanti family.
We called this album ‘Drinking Live at The Shanti’ because whether we have a gig or not, when we are at The Shanti…we are drinking. There is no doubt that these songs are musically riddled with imperfections, the vocals come hot and we border on rhythm-free from time to time. Truth be told, this is very much what we sound like when we play at The Shanti. We see this album as a musical moment in time, as well as a tribute to all the music created daily at The Shanti. We hope you join us in this perspective while listening.
The Bottoms Up Blues Gang’s saving grace has always been the musicians who are willing, and sometimes even excited, to play with us. These shows were no different. Over two nights we were able to incorporate some of our musical dreams, including back-up singers and a three piece harmonica section! Big thanks to all the musicians who play continually with us, as well as the entire St. Louis music scene. There really is no place like St. Louis and we are very proud to call it home.
