After scaring off many a fan in 2017 with the five albums they released in just one year, Australian band King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have been taking things a bit more quietly for a while. But thanks to the corona crisis and the accompanying empty agendas, the band has regained the taste for it. After predecessors Flying Microtonal Banana (2017) and K.G. (2020), L.W. is the third album in the series titled Explorations Into Microtonal Tuning. The use of microtones - tones not found in the Western twelve-tone system - immediately reminds many listeners of Middle Eastern music and at first seems little compatible with Western pop. King Gizzard's explorations prove absolutely the opposite: the unusual tones are striking at first, but fit seamlessly into the adventurous mix of all sorts of different flavours of rock music. These factors create a unique, but almost overcrowded and somewhat exhausting sound. (JV)
