08. Sadik
09. Ornithology
The first and only record guitarist Reg Schwager recorded for the Justin Time label, Resonance finds all three members of his trio performing at the height of their abilities. Recorded in Montreal in 1985, but not transferred to CD until 1997, this overlooked gem seamlessly integrates several well-aged standards with Schwager's thoroughly modern compositions. Schwager seems to have found an ideal partner in drummer Michel Lambert, who colors the music with washes of sound, filling up the ample space that the guitarist leaves (although Schwager is by no means a minimalist; he tends to play in bursts of notes.) Bassist Dave Piltch (who would later become the bass player for Holly Cole) is both tasteful and adventurous throughout, especially on the delicate "Ne Me Quitte Pas," which the trio uses as a backdrop for some focused "energy playing." Although availability may be an issue, Resonance is an essential part of the Canadian jazz catalog.
