In 799, Saint Ludgerus founded the Werden monastery near Essen, and a good 150 years later (852) the Essen women's monastery was established as the forerunner of today's Essen Cathedral.
On two CDs, VOX WERDENSIS documents an office (hourly prayer) in honor of St. Ludgerus and an Easter play from the High Middle Ages, which was performed in the Frauenstift during the Easter Vigil for centuries: two musical gems from the early Christian history of the Ruhr area!
