Since the beginning of it’s existence in 1960, the Slovak Chamber Orchestra has developed into one of the most popular ensembles in the field of classical music in Slovakia, and into one of the principal representatives of the Slovak interpretation art abroad.
The idea of founding a string orchestra has risen in the mind of Prof. Bohdan Warchal in the late 50-s, while still a member of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. He gathered nine exquisite musicians from among the string section members of the Orchestra, and the new ensemble quickly catched attention of concert goers and critics and has found it’s place among renowned chamber bodies. During it’s existence, Slovak Chamber Orchestra has introduced itself on the most important concert stages and music festivals in Europe, North and south America, Asia and Australia.
It has cooperated with many prominent world-known soloists. Several Slovak composers were inspired by the music of the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, which resulted in premiere performances of their new compositions. The ensemble has recorded more than 100 music titles originating in different periods, for domestic, as well as for several foreign record companies. Since January 2001, Ewald Danel is the artistic director of the Orchestra. Lately, the Orchestra performed several extraordinary projects; all the six Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach at one concert (May 2003 – Slovak premiere) and the Orchestral Suites of J. S. Bach at once (October 2004 – also a Slovak premiere).
