Il n’avait pas sorti d’album depuis 2008 et Computer Games. Alors, Kerri Chandler, héraut de la deep house new-yorkaise, s’est gavé sur ce Spaces and Places qui contient 24 titres enregistrés en l’espace de quatre ans dans les meilleurs clubs du monde – où il joue régulièrement depuis ses débuts dans les années 90. Un disque sur lequel Kerri Chandler, connu pour ses sound checks parfois douloureux, a particulièrement soigné le son (mixé en Dolby Atmos par lui-même), travaillant main dans la main avec l’ingénieur du son de chaque lieu qu’il a transformé en studio d’enregistrement.
Un peu de name dropping ? L’Américain a posé son clavier et ses machines au Printworks, l’éphémère usine à raves de Londres (avec un Never Thought aussi soulful qu’un vieux Masters at Work, featuring la chanteuse Sunchilde), au Warehouse Project de Manchester (You Get Lost in It avec ce gimmick entêtant et le refrain à l’avenant de la Belge Lady Linn) ou encore au Rex Club de Paris, en compagnie de son meilleur ambassadeur français, DJ Deep. Pour son plus court déplacement, de chez lui au New Jersey au club Output de Brooklyn, il a invité Bluey Robinson, un chanteur héritier de Stevie Wonder et du son des 70’s, qui lâche un vocal suave de bout en bout sur Tenacity. Ne ratez pas non plus Sunrise, qui dépeint un début d’after au Watergate de Berlin, ni le très chaloupé The Calling, enregistré au Club Qu, lui aussi situé à Berlin.
