Postcolonial South America produced as many freaks, prophets and heretics per capita as did the reign of Solomon in Jerusalem. This philosophical mania was the result of a public trying to make sense of the newfound society they found themselves in, full of different skin colors, spiritualities and a gravitational pull to an unknown European continent. COSMIC RACE’s debut album FUTURE is another seminal document in the canon of these seekers, trying to rearrange the narrative about South America’s duality, one booty shaking tune after another.

Musically, the project has strong identifiable influences: the dirty realness of baile funk from the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro (where Cosmic Race brainchild João Xavi grew up), the re-imagining of a “world” music culture by the Asian Dub Foundation and the mighty pan-afro-brazilian mashups of Batida. The single instrumental “Well” is a great example of this, with pure favella beats synchronizing mbira rhythms. There’s also a characteristic similarity to Sudanese-American Sinkane and his ambition to meld pop from his ancestral country with soul, jazz and electronica.

However, what makes Future such a special album is the intimacy of its themes. Each song traces extensive journeys, past and present, to understand what it is to be a mixed race Brazilian, interacting and fitting into a European country. The first single, “Future”, is a throwback to understanding where he came from; “There's a joke back in Brazil, that we are the country of the future - but that future is too far ahead for us to make it there”. This frustration has its own reply on the album in the much heavier track “Power”; here the urgency is felt, with searing synths and a more punky delivery, to enforce the message that no power can be held onto forever. This anger is held onto in “111”, a song based on the story of a man who went out to celebrate his first paycheck, and while being generous to his friends - was filled with 111 bullets after being suspected by cops to be a dealer flashing his money. “Legend” is another standout track, harking back to Miami Bass minimalism and uplifting lyrics.

Cosmic Race’s beliefs are peppered all over the album, especially in “God” and “Atlantic”. The mysticism of the project shines through: Cosmic Race is named after a controversial book from the 1920’s imploring the recognition of a pan South-American race, to promote unity and solve issues of inequality. Reaching into unknown depths and space to find a spiritual answer to racism is an idea João shares with luminaries such as Tim Maia and Sun Ra. Together, the Bermuda Triangle of Europe, Africa and Brazil has supplied the musical weapons Cosmic Race uses for this timely, intelligent dance album, and it’s an exciting debut!
