South London native Billy Jenkins has seen and done it all over the last 30 years, and yet has somehow managed to remain completely anonymous to the average Joe. Having been best friends with original punk turned 80’s rocker Billy Idol at school (the two would hang out together and listen to Frank Zappa and Velvet Underground records), Jenkins went on to form the art-rock band Burlesque in the seventies, and even appeared on the front of the now defunct Melody Maker magazine. Quickly growing tired of that, he went into musical comedy and played at the Comic Strip Club alongside the likes of Adrian Edmondson and Alexei Sayle.

When The Crowds Have Gone sees Jenkins at his happiest, just playing whatever music he feels like playing. He comes across like a wonderful amalgamation of Louis Armstrong and John Lee Hooker on songs like the opening ‘In My Bones’ and the excellent ‘When Money’s Really Tight’, though his take on blues and jazz really is more original than those comparisons suggest. Jenkins has to be heard to be understood, and nobody taking the risk will be disappointed.
