Alt-pop singer-songwriter Juliana Madrid may be just 21, but she’s already writing songs that speak to romance, a lack thereof, and its pitfalls that can speak to any among us.
“If I’m too young to fall in love / tell me what the fuck that was?,” she wonders aloud on “Savior”. It’s a self aware ballad of self-martyrdom caused by a one-sided relationship, a sinking wreck she’s smart enough to get out of.
Speaking on the track, Madrid shares, “I wrote ‘Savior’ when I was pretty fresh out of my first real long relationship. It’s about having this intense love that slowly starts to fade when you come to the realization that you have been giving up more of yourself than you are receiving, and it’s drained you completely. You know there will never be enough to give to this other person and it has created this apathetic attitude that eventually leads to the end.“
Hence, it speaks to any among us who’ve felt stuck in a relationship in which we’re putting in all the energy: whether the other party has begun to fall out of love or is simply too selfish to meet on the same level, it speaks to a sadly doomed affair, the sort that’s hard to move past. “Savior” plunges head first into those icy waters, all while retaining a catchy vibe.
