This fourth volume of York Bowen’s piano music comes from two distinct periods in Bowen’s life. The first two decades of the new century and the period from 1949 to 1960. Despite the varying nature of their provenance, the music throughout has an impressive consistency of style. There is the delightful and beautifully articulate three-movement Sonatina of 1954 and the early Suite Mignonne (the Fourth Suite) and Third Suite, all composed before Bowen volunteered to join the Scots Guards during World War I. Also included are the Three Novelettes, published in 1949 which exemplify much of the emotional mood of the music of this collection, and finally the youthful Polonaise in F sharp, a thinly veiled homage to Chopin, and ‘A Whim’ a distinctively styled miniature. Joop Celis has become quite an expert on the music of York Bowen giving lectures, master-classes and recitals all over the world. The previous three volumes have been very well received by the international press.
This is the third volume of the solo piano works of York Bowen. Joop Celis has been described by International Record Review as ‘a thoroughly sympathetic advocate of Bowen’s work, powerful and poised, nimble and sensitive’. This volume covers a range of works, including the Short Sonata, Op. 35 No. 1 which, according to Robert Matthew-Walker, is ‘one of the gems in Bowen’s entire piano output, it’s melodic inspiration is first class and the treatment of the material is quite masterly and wholly organic… utterly delightful’. Requiring considerable virtuosity, the Toccata is a relatively late work, dating from 1957, and was performed by Bowen himself. Matthew-Walker writes, ‘there is no finer example of the genre in the British solo piano repertoire – and one would be hard pressed to find it’s equal by any twentieth-century composer of whatever nationality’. The disc also contains the Ballade No. 2, Three Miniatures, Thee Serious Dances, Three Pieces, Op. 20 and to of the Three Preludes, Op. 81.
