Dakota Staton possédait toutes les qualités d’une grande chanteuse : un phrasé naturel, une voix au timbre immédiatement reconnaissable, une présence scénique favorisée par un physique avantageux et, surtout, une manière unique de s’impliquer dans une interprétation. À l’image de Dinah Washington, son modèle vocal, elle était capable d’aborder tous les genres : jazz, blues, variété de haut vol, avec une égale réussite. Jusqu’au tout début des années soixante, au temps de sa grande époque illustrée en partie par ces enregistrements, elle a bénéficié des services des meilleurs arrangeurs et de moyens de production à la hauteur de son talent. Puis un mariage qui ne l’aura pas vraiment aidé, au moins sur le plan strictement professionnel, la difficulté de trouver un label, une politique de production hésitante et sans grande imagination, la conduiront à un silence discographique pendant les années 80. À l’opposé d’une Nancy Wilson qui a toujours su évoluer sans se renier, Dakota, livrée à elle-même, se révèlera incapable de s’adapter aux nouvelles donnes de l’industrie du disque et décevra ses admirateurs sans conquérir un nouveau public. Sa trajectoire, qui s’annonçait triomphale, connaîtra un déclin uniquement sur le plan commercial, précisons-le, car Dakota Staton est toujours restée une grande chanteuse comme le prouvent ses derniers enregistrements
