I grew up in the Bronx, the northernmost borough of New York City. It's changed a lot since I was a kid, but one thing has remained the same. If I had a dollar for every tree within a mile of my house, I couldn't afford to buy lunch. As a young boy, I actually believed that concrete was natural, like plants and animals.
I mention all that so you can imagine the impact that Tarzan movies had on me as a kid. The thought that you could run someplace without having to look left and right for traffic, or worry about running smack into a building, was unimaginable to me. Trees were exotic life-forms. I knew about animals: they lived in the Bronx Zoo. What I didn't get was that somebody had put them there. It wasn't their natural habitat.
Tarzan movies might as well have been science fiction. Trees grew everywhere. Animals wandered freely about. If you listened to the world around you, you'd hear the sounds of birds and animals, not car horns and shouting.
It turns out that wasn't really Africa we were looking at, but as kids we didn't know or care. It didn't matter that the characters were running around the back lot at MGM or the Iverson Ranch or the L.A. Botanical Gardens. It also didn't matter to us that Tarzan's jungle cry had been electronically enhanced. As far as we were concerned, the whole thing was the real deal. That's what we needed it to be, and expected it to be.
The plots of the Tarzan movies weren't very exotic. They might just as well have been westerns. There were good guys and bad guys. Instead of somebody trying to steal your horse or your ranch or your gold mine, there were lost cities and ivory smugglers or diamond thieves. But it was the settings of the Tarzan movies that were so exotic to us. Tarzan made friends with the animals. They followed him around and he named them and seemed to communicate with them. I had a pet goldfish named Jimmie. He was my beloved first pet, but the relationship seemed less personal than the one Tarzan had with Cheetah.
Those Saturday afternoons at the movies were pretty special, and Tarzan movies were as exotic as it got. For me and my friends, it was a glimpse into an alternate universe that existed far away from the Bronx. We traveled to Africa for the very modest price of a movie ticket. Coming out of the theatre on Jerome Avenue, we all looked in vain for a vine to grab so we could swing our way home. None of us ever found one, although we all found our way out of the Bronx eventually.
