Like so many of Haydn's compositions, the six Paris Symphonies were commissioned by a musical patron. In this case, the young French aristocrat Claude-Francois-Marie Rigoley, Comte d'Ogny. The six symphonies were among the first works of this genre for which Haydn was actually paid. The works, composed in the space of just two short years, are imbued with dance forms and the occasional folk melodies popular to Parisians of the day. The subtitles added to Symphonies No. 82, No. 83, and No. 85 (The Bear, The Hen, and The Queen (Antoinette), respectively) were done so by the publisher and not by Haydn himself. Still, upon listening it is not difficult to guess why the two animal names were chosen.
This 1976 recording of the English Chamber Orchestra lead by conductor Daniel Barenboim makes for a fine collection of these works. The sound is neither too fragile and delicate nor excessively ponderous and heavy. Rather, they seem to provide a realistic version of the size of orchestra Haydn may have heard during the symphonies' premieres. The balance of the orchestra is quite nice, and the articulation is clear and uniform all the way from the violins to the basses. The oboe has a distinctive English sound, but it seems to blend in nicely with the rest of the orchestra. This is definitely a worthwhile choice for listeners looking to obtain all of these symphonies in one collection.
