"Four Stars ... (Miles Ahead is) a quiet masterpiece ... with a guaranteed place in the top flight of Miles albums."
- The Penguin Guide to Jazz
"... some choice sides (on Blue Haze) ... underappreciated at the time of the original release, these brilliantly styled solos by Davis are now certain to find a more perceptive and receptive audience."
- Billboard
This remastered compilation combines two highly acclaimed and influential mid 1950s Miles Davis albums: the first eight songs come from three sessions recorded in 1953 and 1954, issued as Blue Haze in 1956 and containing material that had been previously available on 10-inch vinyl. Davis is backed by different combinations of dream team musicians, including pianists Charles Mingus and Horace Silver, bassist Percy Heath and drummers Art Blakely, Max Roach and Kenny Clarke. The tracks with Gil Evans were recorded and released in 1957 under the title Miles Ahead, the first of several collaborations between Evans and Davis, who plays flugelhorn exclusively on these numbers.
