Alabama-based country outfit Shenandoah rose to popularity in the late '80s, combining a tuneful, radio-friendly sound with melodies and arrangements that harked back to a more traditional style. Along with releasing two consecutive gold records, they hit the top of the country charts with songs including "The Church on Cumberland Road," "Two Dozen Roses," and "Next to You, Next to Me." During their early-'90s commercial peak, the band were chart staples and even notched a Country Music Association Award and a Grammy Award for their 1994 Alison Krauss duet "Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart." Although their success dwindled after the late '90s, Shenandoah remained a popular touring act and continued to record sporadically over the next two decades. In 2020, they teamed up with prominent artists like Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley, and Blake Shelton to record an album of duets called Every Road.
Shenandoah were formed in 1984 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Guitarist Jim Seales and drummer Mike McGuire, both session musicians, assembled the group, bringing aboard bassist Ralph Ezell and keyboard man Stan Thorn, both of whom were also studio players. With the addition of lead singer Marty Raybon, the lineup was complete, and they began playing as the MGM Band. After McGuire brought songwriter Robert Byrne out to see the new group, Byrne arranged for them to cut a demo tape, which won the group a deal with Columbia Records. The deal with Columbia came with a small catch: the label believed the name "the MGM Band" could cause legal problems, so they adopted the new handle Shenandoah, suggested to them by Columbia.
