After the successful first CD ‘Torres del Alma’ with quartets from the Spanish Renaissance, the idea arose to create a second CD with new music and arrangements for the Eagle recorder and a unique performance of the ‘Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares’ of John Dowland with guest musician Daniël Brüggen. With this recording we aim to explore the extremes of the recorder quartet sound and forge new paths. Along with the medieval Aquila altera, the classical ute quartets of Haydn happen to sound excellent on a modern Eagle recorder. I arranged a saxophone quartet by Bob Mintzer and wrote a Chorale for two Eagle altos, a tenor and a bass.
Koraal 1 is inspired by the poem ‘Westerbork 1943’ by Rudy Bremer (1936-2013). The music represents the slow power of a goods train filled with desperate people on their way to the Westerbork Concentration Camp. Rudy Bremer wrote the following about this experience: “One day they came and took me to a Jewish orphanage. My mother was sent to Poland, never to return. On the way she threw a letter out of the train: ‘Save my child’. Somehow it reached my aunt Fie and uncle Age”.
