Arc, the new album from NJ punk/power-pop trio Defecting Grey arrives just in time for warmer weather. The perfect album to blast in the car at full volume with the windows down, Arc is fast-paced, punishing, energetic, and fun as hell.
The album’s twelve tracks continue to solidify the sound that the band began building on their EPs in a way that comes as no surprise from the three industry veterans that make up Defecting Grey. Brothers CJ and Vince Grogan (The Grievous Angels/Gigantic/Buzzed Meg) and Mike Polilli (Buzzkill/Atom Driver) work perfectly together to create a consistently warm, fuzzy and incredibly energetic sound that is heard immediately on the album’s explosive opener “Radios On” and only continues throughout the remaining songs.
Complete with timeless vocal work, urgent drums and full guitar and bass work, Arc is an album that will withstand the test of time. Songs like the short but sweet “No FX” and “Politik” lean more into the band’s punk roots while the title track feels like a perfect summer jam. While extremely consistent and energetic throughout, there are some moments of diversity that can be found on the album as well. One of Arc‘s longer songs, “Sarsen” begins to slow things down before the epic six-minute penultimate song, “The Seven Hunters”, which feels like a perfect cumulation of the album’s themes.
Defecting Grey display their strengths throughout the entirety of Arc in a way that feels effortless and natural, so it comes as no surprise that the trio managed to knock out all twelve songs in just three days of recording. The result is an album that feels very full and well rounded – something that not many artists can accomplish on a debut full-length.
