June 30th marks the 300th anniversary of Jiří Antonín Benda (a.k.a. Georg Anton), the Czech composer mostly active in Berlin under the reign of Frederick the Great, in whose orchestra he played members of his family such as his brother František (a brilliant composer too). He is now considered an inspiration for Mozart thanks to his innovations in the Singspiel genre. His music reveals an irresistible melodic charm as proven by this lovely and rare flute sonata, performed by Jean-Pierre Rampal, and accompanied by other pieces from the late German Baroque.
