There’s more than one kind of cowboy music. We’re accustomed to the countrified soundtrack of classic Hollywood movies, with their idealised visions of settlers taming the wilderness. It’s easy to forget that other regions of the Americas have their own ranching cultures. The joropo music of the Colombian band Cimarrón conjures a very different sort of landscape, specifically the Orinoco plains on the borderlands with Venezuela. There is, too, a feminine focus to the band’s latest album, fronted by its singer and co-founder Ana Veydó, who strikes a Brunnhilde-like pose on the album’s sleeve. La Recia translates approximately as The Tough Woman. Veydó’s distinctive, keening voice celebrates the spirit world and nature. There are no macho clichés to be found here.
